Fiddling, storytelling and "plenty of modern-day ass kicking"

Sara Milonovich is an award-winning singer, fiddler, songwriter/composer and bandleader, as well as a sought-after accompanist for a number of other artists in many musical genres. In addition to fronting her indie alt-grass band, Daisycutter, she has performed throughout the US, Europe, and beyond, performing American roots, folk-rock, bluegrass, Appalachian, and Celtic music.

Growing up on a working farm in rural upstate New York, she began playing fiddle when she was four and by nine was leading her own band (around the same time she learned to drive a tractor). She joined the Adirondack Fiddlers at age seven and learned traditional New York fiddle tunes and styles from older fiddlers who played at grange halls and Adirondack lumber camps. At age twelve she released her first cassette of traditional fiddle tunes.

After a collection of awards for fiddling, singing, and composing, she left school at sixteen to hit the road with the McKrells, a bluegrass band. A diverse trajectory led her from there through a busy career as an accompanist and collaborator with such artists as Richard Shindell, Pete Seeger (including on his Grammy-winning album At 89), Eliza Gilkyson, Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys, and NY string band Mountain Quickstep.

Northeast, her most recent album with Daisycutter, offers an ode to the blue-collar Northeast exploring down-and-out cities and abandoned farms, heartbreak, resilience, and hope. She says these are all things the region shares with the rest of blue-collar America, except “it also happens to be a lot colder.”  The album fuses a cinematic city view and a bracing dose of rural realism into “…a deft mix of literate folk, plaintive balladry, and plenty of modern-day ass kicking.” (Chronogram Magazine)

For this show, Sara will be joined by Greg Anderson, her longtime guitarist, producer and Daisycutter bandmate. He has also worked with a wide variety of artists including Eileen Ivers, Richard Shindell, Cry Cry Cry, Cathie Ryan, Doctor Nerve, and The Klezmatics.

“A mix of bluegrass and a twinge of political/punk attitude and lyrics.” – The Corner
